Finding Your Voice Through Dungeons & Dragons

ree

When people picture speech therapy, they usually imagine a clinic room, worksheets, maybe some structured exercises. What they don’t usually imagine is a table full of adventurers, dice rolling, and a quest to save a village from a dragon.

But what if practising your voice didn’t have to feel like “therapy” at all?

That’s exactly why we’re running speech pathology groups mixed with Dungeons & Dragons, a 90-minute weekly group for $90, co-led by a Dungeon Master and a Speech Pathologist. It’s speech practice… disguised as play.

Why D&D works so well

Dungeons & Dragons isn’t just a game. It’s a storytelling experience. You step into the shoes of a character — someone brave, magical, mysterious, loud, quiet… whatever you want them to be.

In that space, you get to talk, listen, respond, make choices, and work together to solve problems. Without even realising it, you’re practising some of the most important communication skills:

  • Listening carefully to others

  • Speaking clearly and confidently

  • Taking turns and reading social cues

  • Expressing emotion through your voice

  • Building connections with the people at the table

It’s social interaction that feels natural and low-pressure, because you’re focused on the story, not on “getting it right.”

A space to explore your voice

One of the best things about roleplay is that it gives you permission to try things out. You can explore a new way of speaking, shift your tone or pitch, or just get more comfortable being heard.

For trans and gender-diverse people, this can be an especially affirming space. You can step into a character who already has the voice you imagine for yourself, and practise bringing that voice to life in a way that feels safe, supported, and fun.

And because the group is run by a qualified speech pathologist, you’re not just playing — you’re learning, too. There’s gentle guidance, voice techniques woven into the adventure, and space to grow at your own pace.

Why this works better than a worksheet

When communication is tied to something meaningful — a quest, a conversation, a laugh with teammates — it becomes real. You’re not just practising a skill in isolation. You’re using it. That’s where confidence builds. That’s when voices start to feel like they belong.

This group isn’t about perfection. It’s about play, connection, and finding your voice in a way that feels good.
